A downloadable game

Horizontal is a tiny horror(ish) experience for the Playdate. Give it a shot, let me know if you can finish it!

There are currently some crashes related to fileplayer MP3s that I unfortunately can't resolve. Seems to potentially be an issue with Playdate code itself, which I've opened up a case for.

YouTube link in the sidebar for a version 1 playthrough if you don't have a Playdate.

CHANGELOG:

6/22/22: VERSION 1.1: room three accelerometer fix, added animation between rooms two and three, added clarification to use crank at end of room one

Really enjoyed this. Feel like it’s one of the few games using all the stuff that makes the Playdate unique. Thanks for it!

thank you for playing and the kind words!

Spooky

I can't tell you how much I love this game.  Absolutely fun and despite its short length has replay value.  Looking forward to it being a full game!

I just finished it and I gotta say, that was the most unique experience I've had on Playdate so far. I loved that you used the mechanics differently than most people would think to. Some of it kind of reminded me of something David Lynch would do. I hope you make a longer version of this in the future!

I can get to the closet/stab part in the beginning, then it freezes every time :(

interesting.. probably the same bug that’s been around related to audio that’s in the hands of Playdate/Panic. I thought I had tested with the recent version and confirmed it’s gone now though. Are you clicking the crank back into its housing compartment to “stab” the enemy once it pops up?

Aah, no I wasn't.  It said to crank, so I was just there spinning the crank not knowing what to do.  I got past that part, thanks.

Hi! Just wanted to comment that I was able to play the game to completition on version 1.12.1 without issues. I found it quite enjoyable! :D

oh no way! Awesome, I guess Panic fixed some internal Playdate issues surrounding the crashes! Thank you so much

I am intersted to play, but the game often crashes on me at the alarm clock screen. Sometimes I can get past that bit but I haven't been able to get beyond the "Listen" portion. I am not sure if I am not doing something right or if the game is crashing, but it seems like nothing I do will get me beyond the black screen

yeah, unfortunately the recent version update from Panic broke this project even harder for some reason. If it’s not actually throwing the “game crashed” screen in the black room, keep tilting the playdate to the right. It’s finicky. I’m pushing up a fix for a couple things relatively soon

pushed a fix for the "Listen" portion if you end up getting past the other crashes lol

*EDIT*

Okay, now that I've played through the full game I gotta say this is such a rad experience! I feel so dumb not knowing to stab with the crank. Love how every "search" section feels unique and I gotta say that shower portion was tense! SO good!

oh hey thank you! Yup definitely just a demo type of thing. Some bugs I need to resolve but waiting on a new Playdate SDK version :--)

I just realized you posted a video too lol THANK YOU! That's actually only about 1/5 of the game. I should've made a little pop up to "use the crank" during the "stab" part when the "enemy" appears

OH! I'll fix that then!
I've updated the original review above and added the fixed video to it. Sorry again for not getting all the way through.

lol no worries to be honest I made it pretty vague 😆 wow you’re quick. I’m surprised the game didn’t crash on you, I have an update pushing out a fix soon

I'm happy to have gotten to play the actual whole game! It's so good! Oh and btw yeah it did crash haha, just the power of editing. I crashed during the "listen" part.
